I personally love to wear my leather jacket all year round, but fall is typically the season where we pull them out of our closets. The number one aspect of a leather jacket, is the quality. When you have a quality leather jacket, everything else falls into place.

Whether you are shopping at Dolce and Gabbana (I wish!) or at Zara, you should keep these tips in mind. Especially the care for your leather jacket, it’s a big invested and with some tender loving care, if will last for a very long time.

1. The Fit

Leather is going to stretch, you don’t want to buy a jacket that is too tight. Same goes for pants, and both need to hug you. If you are between sizes, like me right now, you definitely want to keep this in mind.

The thinner the leather is, the more flexibility it has.

2. The Lining

This has to match the type of jacket you’re looking for. A fitted, tailored blazer or jacket needs to have a light and soft lining. Preferably silk or satin. For a biker look, you want something heavier so you have that feeling of protection inside and out.

3. The Colour

Black is the most classic colour when it comes to a leather jacket. The colour is versatile, going with any outfit and colour.

But colours are now trendy, there are pastels to vibrant neons to choose from. Mix and matching fabrics is also a trend you need to be on. Just adds that extra depth to your outfit.

4. The Cost

Now, everyone has a different budget, and hey there are some awesome sales too! You can spend generally $500-$3,000 for a high-quality leather jacket, but there are some great brands out there offering for less. When it comes to a leather jacket though, if you buy a cheaper one, you know they cheaped out somewhere along the process. I bought mine a couple years ago at Anthropologie on sale, last one in my size and was still around $250 half off.

So don’t fret if it’s not in your short future, wait it out and look for one during the sale season. Great thing about leather jackets, is that they can stay in style for years.

5. The Care

Ok, so now you’ve invested in a leather jacket, you want to now care for it like your baby. It’s porous, like skin, so it will absorb everything. It’s very important that you care for it and protect it like your skin.
