A Week with a 2024 BMW X5 + Review

bmw x5 idrive40 review

Recently BMW lent me their new 2024 X5 iDrive40 to take for a week and drive around with the family. I was so excited that I immediately booked us for a few days in Victoria. The X5 was a perfect road trip car to take for an adventure.

Immediately when I picked up the new 2024 X5 from the dealership, I couldn’t believe how nice the interior was. It’s so spacious, and the trunk is huge but driving it around the city, it doesn’t feel overwhelmingly large. We had plenty of room for Rowan’s car seat, plus I reckon you could fit three across with no problem.

I appreciated all the technology included in this new model including the BMW Digital Cockpit Professional with Head-Up Display, Video Augmented Reality Navigation, and more to the Sky Lounge Panoramic Glass Sunroof. I loved the head-up display when driving and it displays the speed limit in front of the steering wheel or even the navigation too!

BMW has electrified all its internal combustion X5 models. This allows for smoother automatic start/stop functions and a more efficient acceleration. You can feel that as the driver of the vehicle.

There are also new systems for automated driving and parking, plus the latest generation iDrive control system with the BMW Curved Display and BMW Operating System 8.

The 2024 BMW X5 xDrive40i Vehicle is equipped with an 11-speaker audio system and features a 14.90-inch, Colour, Touchscreen display with voice-activating capabilities for Audio, Phone, Navigation, and Climate Control. You can also connect your smartphone to the audio system via Carplay, Android, USB, Bluetooth, AM/FM, Satellite Radio, and Hard Drive. We had fun toggling amongst all the options, and listening to our podcasts.

Once settled inside, you and your passengers are treated to a cabin lined with high-quality materials: plenty of charging points for devices, and—depending on the options chosen—myriad luxury features.

Power-adjustable front seats with memory for the driver are standard. All models come with:

  • a power-adjustable steering column
  • heated front seats
  • a panoramic sunroof
  • dual-zone automatic climate control
  • a power rear liftgate
  • rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • customizable ambient lighting
  • Massaging seats
  • remote start
  • soft-close doors
  • acoustic glass
  • a leather dashboard
  • heated front armrests and steering wheel

If you want to splurge and add on some options, you can add a Bowers & Wilkins surround-sound audio system that features diamond-domed tweeters.

You might ask what’s the trunk space like? Well, the X5 offers plentiful cargo space. We had two large suitcases, a cooler, and tote bags (traveling with a toddler lol) and you could fit plenty more along with a stroller for any parents out there!

Oh, I have to mention the gas consumption. A full tank is almost 900km! With the eco-boost, we used it for a week, drove around, took a ferry, and didn’t even go below half a tank! That is amazing, alone I would save hundreds of dollars a month with this tank compared to the vehicle I drive now.

OK, let’s talk pricing. Pricing starts at $86,000 for the base model X5 sDrive40i. The X5 is available in four variants with three unique powertrains and two drivetrain options. There are also a few add-on options.

Overall this was such a treat to drive! I was sad to bring it back to the dealership, we really enjoyed using it as a family. Driving around the city was smooth and taking it on the freeway was a comfortable drive. If anyone was looking to upgrade, I’d recommend the new BMW X5 iDrive40!
