tv shows collage

Fall is approaching, and with it comes a season where we stay inside and binge watch our favourite tv series. I’m sharing the best TV shows to binge-watch in 2021, between nursing Rowan and being in lockdown, we ended up watching a lot of great tv series in 2021. Leave your favourite shows in the comments below!

I love watching a variety of genres when it comes to TV shows, from comedy to dramas. I’m really excited that a few of these series have new seasons coming out soon, so this is the time to catch up and binge-watch them on a rainy weekend before the season premiere. Don’t forget to pair your watch session with a delicious cocktail!

What TV Shows to Binge-Watch This Fall

1. For All Mankind (AppleTV)

The reimagining of the US space race and the effects on history if the Russians had been first to land on the moon is what makes this show great. Each episode seems like a little standalone story, some of these are amazing, others less interesting but always entertaining.

2. The Morning Show (AppleTV)

A new season starts this month, I thoroughly enjoyed the first season where The Morning Show mirrors the reality of what happened with Matt Lauer in many ways. The show starts on a big note and gradually turns into a mixture of good vs bad, love and hate, and tricks you in ways I did not expect. You never quite know what is going to happen as people keep lying and backstabbing everyone.

3. Succession (HBO)

This is one of my favourite all-time series, I love a good HBO drama and this does not disappoint. If you are on the lookout for a show with plot twists, drama laced with comedic moments, and razor-sharp dialogues, look no further than Succession.

4. Insecure (HBO)

Sad that the upcoming season is the last, it’s such a smart, witty series. Issa Rae is amazing at capturing the different essences of black women and the struggles they go through with dating, career advancements, and just random acts of life. I really appreciate the different phases of friendship and the truth behind how hard it is to navigate different situations in life.

5. Ozark (Netflix)

Everything about this show is brilliant. A terrific story that shows how far a family is willing to go to stay together & stay alive despite increasing obstacles. If you enjoyed Narcos and similar series, this crime thriller will fill that hole.

6. The Great (Amazon Prime)

I don’t think I have laughed as hard as when we watched this series earlier in the year. It is a parody of Catherine the Great’s early part of her life in Russia. It’s funny, obscene at points, thoroughly amusing and the costume and set design is stunning.

7. Hacks (HBO)

Another hilarious, well-written comedy! Not going to lie, I went in with low expectations but wow I laughed a lot throughout. Deserves the Emmy nominations! The writing is outstanding and the characters are the best part. Each one is well developed and so identifiable. They are humans with flaws which makes them completely relatable.

8. 100 Ft Wave (HBO)

Fascinating documentary on Garret McNamath and big wave surfers in Portugal. His wife is also a saint, I don’t know how she has the patience for him. It’s a great docuseries, obviously beautiful footage of waves and surfers, but you get right into their personal lives, challenges, see their ambitions and that addiction to riding the perfect wave. It’s a must-watch for anyone.

9. Starstruck (HBO)

I am a sucker for any British comedy series or dramas, they never disappoint. This was funny, well written, no romantic cliches, just relatable to any modern woman dating in today’s world. I appreciated this rom-com and its otherworldly attempt to normalize a relationship that would be normally unfathomable.

10. Shrill (Hulu/Crave)

We discovered this show last year and binged watched it in two days, so funny! The last season just ended a couple of months ago so definitely put it on your watch list. Starring Aidy Bryant from SNL, you follow her life and how she wants to change it but not her body. It’s great, witty, cringy, and all the supporting cast were fantastic.

11. I May Destroy You (HBO)

Positive, honest and needed discourse about what our intimate and romantic relationships look like. While the subject matter can be heavy, it’s not portrayed with a heavy hand – it’s a very nuanced, and very fresh perspective on this subject matter.

12.  We Are Who We Are (HBO)

The cinematography is absolutely incredible and I highly recommend this show to anyone who’s into visually beautiful cinematography. I loved how Luca Guadagnino tapped in the real emotions of teens now rather than assume we all just want to be with our crush at school or something but in reality, it’s not like that.

13. The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu/CTV)

Incredible series with outstanding acting. It is an outstanding and powerful adaptation of Margaret Attwood’s book about a bleak dystopian society with a brutal and sadistic regime towards women. The plot is something I could truly see happening in our world’s future. Maybe it’s a reason why so many are engrossed by the series?

14. The White Lotus (HBO)

6 episodes, all hilarious, you honestly have no idea where it’s going until the last 30 minutes of the series. The cast is sublime – the comic timing and face-pulling of Jennifer Coolidge is a joy to behold and she is hands down my favourite character – but every single character is perfectly cast and has a great back story!

15. Loki (Disney+)

I love The Mandalorian, and this series was so well done, even for us as non-Marvel fans. The plot is very good and I was looking forward to what was going to happen almost every time throughout the show. I won’t share any spoilers, but it was as if we were watching a movie each episode, loved Owen Wilson in it!

16. Line of Duty (BBC/CBC)

I watched seasons 1-5 on Netflix and it was just brilliant. It’s an outstanding show. The screenplay, story, direction, and acting are top-notch. This is definitely British crime drama at its best. This riveting series explores the world of police corruption, each season is very shocking.

17. The Queen’s Gambit (Netflix)

Ok, so this came out in 2020, but if you have not watched it yet, you must! I think everyone I knew who watched the series, wanted to take up chess afterward, probably why there was such an uptick on chess sets.

Whether chess means anything to you or not, this is a superbly watchable TV series. Anya Taylor-Joy as Beth Harmon is simply mesmerizing, and the people and the events that weave around her personal story are beautifully held in balance.

18. Ted Lasso (AppleTV)

I wish we all knew a Ted Lasso, and I wish I had someone bake me shortbread cookies every morning. It’s funny, a little bit of drama, reminds me of a British rom-com (maybe being set in London?) but the characters also annoy you as well. I really enjoy watching this series. Without giving anything away story-wise it’s a really good underdog story that is heartfelt and quite the laugh. At times it has a bit of a serious feel to it, but immediately falls back on its humor which to me is comedy gold that constantly brought a smile to my face.

19. Mare of Easttown (HBO)

If you know me I am all about a serial killer series, fiction, or documentary I am not picky. These mini-series episodes were perfection, the story had so many twists and turns I couldn’t stop watching. Character development is how good writing makes an audience care about the actors who bring them to life and this seven-episode tale did just that. The short plot summary is she is a detective in a small town and investigating a murder that affects a lot of people.

20. Nine Perfect Strangers (Amazon Prime)

Quirky, weird, but I like it. The characters and their various issues – addiction, grief, self-esteem, marital challenges, aging, avoidance – are relatable.
