A Medela Pump in Style With Max Flow Review

Are you getting a new breast pump and unsure which one you should get? Here’s a complete review of the new Medela Pump in Style with Max Flow, including the pros and cons, and what else to consider.

After weeks of using the Medela Pump in Style With Max Flow, I can safely share my thoughts about this breast pump. Short story, I love it! I had an older Medela model with Rowan (they don’t even make it anymore) and liked that one, but this is vastly better.

I’m exclusively breastfeeding, I do pump once a day, trying to build a supply to donate my milk to the milk bank near me but also make a small reserve for my freezer and for anyone who is babysitting Isabella or has on hand for those rough nights!

The Medela Pump In Style with Max Flow is a double electric breast pump, allowing you to pump both breasts simultaneously. It can be powered via a wall outlet or a battery backup pack. It also comes with more extras than any other pump, including a pump bag with an ice pack, an insulated milk storage bag, bottles, and more.

I appreciate the extra thought given to the silicone breast flange, which is comfortable. It has a closed system, making it hygienic, and prevents the backflow of milk or condensation in the tubing, nothing worse when that happens! However, this pump is not the quietest and may disturb your sleeping partner or newborn if in the same room.

The interface is easy to use and doesn’t require reading an extensive manual. However, without a screen, it doesn’t track information. You’ll need to be aware, as you can easily lose track of your suction level or how long you’ve been pumping.

Here are some pros of the Medela Pump in Style Breastpump:

  • It is an effective, quality pump that is sold at a lower price point than many other pumps.
  • It is a closed system pump, which means no milk gets into the tubing.
  • There are only two pump parts to clean, with no annoying, hard-to-get-to places.
  • It comes with two sets of breast shields (sizes 21mm and 24mm).
  • 2-Phase Expression® Technology that mimics baby’s natural sucking rhythm
  • All parts that touch breast milk are made without BPA
  • It comes with everything you need to pump at home or away, including a cooler bag and stylish carry bag.
  • Includes a battery pack for convenient pumping away from the power outlet (batteries not included)
  • The advanced motor generates a vacuum with MaxFlow™ micro-vibrations for effective breast milk expression.

There are also a few disadvantages:

  • It doesn’t have a rechargeable battery, so you need to be near an outlet to use it (or have extra batteries)
  • It doesn’t have a timer or the ability to see what vacuum strength your breast pump is on (just the ability to adjust it up or down).
  • It’s not as quiet as some other pumps.

  1. I honestly had no idea the flanges were silicone now, that sounds way more comfortable than the hard plastic ones I used with my first! Also so cool that you’re donating to a milk bank, I’ve been thinking about doing that too.
